Hardcore Games on Handsets, Id Scales Down To Gadgets

The global mobile games market is set to reach $10 billion by 2009 and more 3G networks are coming online world wide to allow delivery of fast downloads of multimedia rich games. Id Software is taking advantage of this by expanding its relationship with Fountainhead Entertainment to create Id Mobile, a division focused on the creation of games for handheld devices.

The market for such games is expected to grow significantly in coming years as more sophisticated devices allow for more complex and entertaining games. The software developer’s new arm will create games for mobiles, Nintendo DS and Sony’s PSP.

Windows Server 2008 For Parallel Computing Now In Beta

Microsoft released the first public beta of Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008, a server OS and tools designed for the fast-growing high-performance computing (HPC) market. Microsoft also established the Parallel Computing Initiative, a program creating a set of common development tools across multicore desktops and clusters.

Windows HPC Server 2008, the successor to Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003, is based on the Windows Server 2008 OS. Key features are new high-speed networking, efficient and scalable cluster management tools, advanced failover capabilities, a service oriented architecture (SOA) job scheduler, and support for partners’ clustered file systems.

The beta is now available for download at http://www.microsoft.com/hpc; the final version will be generally available in the second half of 2008.

China Mobile Sets Up on Mount Everest

China’s largest cell phone service provider successfully tested a transmission station on Mount Everest on Tuesday, making it possible for climbers and those on next year’s Olympic torch relay to make calls, a state news agency reported.

China Mobile had to hire yaks and porters to help transport equipment up to the station site at 21,325 feet.
