Crusaders & Villains Pt1: How To Be A Superhero

I was bumbling around the bookstore the other day looking for a good book on handguns and home defense (a different story) when I stumbled across a totally geeky book, which led to another and yet another great geeky paperback for the wannabe hero or aspiring villain.

Fellow do-gooders, I’m telling you it was a treasure trove of coolness and decided to blog about them all, starting with the one that began my little odyssey; written by non other than Dr. Metropolis himself, it’s:

How To Be A Superhero

Superhero Or Stripper, You Decide

I stumbled across something that made me do a double take. has some cold cast statues of superheroes in anime styling, one of them is Marvel’s heroine Psylocke, you can view their Psylocke page here. If you’re not familiar with Psylocke, some superhero geeks have written up an extensive bio of this character on Wikipedia.

The problem I see here (pics below) is that this character wound up looking more like a stripper about to pole dance than a Marvel superhero that partners with the X-Men. It would appear that from all her changes in appearance over the years, the action figure designers took this one to model the statue over.

Psylocke or Stripper

It’s not the costume that made me do the double take, it was the combination of that costume coupled with the pose that appears to do this character a disservice in my opinion.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not looking at this like some kind of feminazi that thinks this is demeaning to women, quite the contrary; but it does make me wonder if the target audience is not your average superhero geek, but rather an adolescent boy to have a Marvel Anime to fantasize over. Especially since it appears to be just a run of the mill anime stripper character that had the costume painted onto it and voila! You now have a Psylocke. That was easy.

Overall I’m not questioning the designers tastes here, I actually like this, but I am questioning the effort they put into creating this collectable since it doesn’t bear much resemblance in a pose one would expect from their heroine.

In any case, if you’re a superhero fan and interested in this to add to your collection, the statue is 5 inches tall, is a limited edition of 500 units and will cost US$79.95.

Ex-Supergirl Visiting Smallville

supergirl 1984

Former Supergirl star Helen Slater (above) will appear in an episode of The CW’s Smallville next season, Variety reported. Slater is set to guest-star in the sixth episode of the season as the aunt of the show’s Supergirl, played by Laura Vandervoort.

Smallville has a history of bringing in actors associated with other adaptations of the Superman comic. Dean Cain, who starred in the television series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, will also appear as a villain in the fourth episode of the season.

Supergirl Lands In Smallville

Supergirl vs. Wonder Woman, who ya got in that mud wrestling match? OK, enough with the fantasies, we’ve got real news here.

Laura Vandervoot is the smoking hot Supergirl in Smallville next season playing ‘Kara’, the Krypton cousin of Clark Kent. She got the call a few weeks ago that she’s joining the Smallville cast and filming has already begun.

You may have to peer a little to tell that this is her costume she’s wearing in the publicity photo, not what she’s wearing to school but what she’s wearing to the bank robbery she needs to stop.

Question: How does she get her nails done at the salon when they’re as strong as steel?

People magazine has the details.

The Hero Machine

The Hero Machine is a Flash-based application that allows you to create characters or fantasy sports logos you’ve always imagined, but couldn’t draw for yourself. The app appears to be hosted by a Marvel Comics Virtual club.

Below is ‘The Grape Destroyer’ (clicky), that I created in about 5 minutes using an intuitive interface with a wealth of control over shapes, accessories, logos, weapons and more. When you’re done, the only way for you to save an image of your hero is via a screen capture.

Though my hero may look a little weak, be sure to check out some of the sample pre-generated heroes and villains to get a good idea of the power at your fingertips.

Geeks Rejoice, Bionic Woman Returns This Fall!

Wednesday nights on NBC are looking up this Fall. The peacock has green-lighted the remake of Bionic Woman – “Better. Stronger. Faster.”

If you’re not familiar with the original series that lasted 3 seasons in the mid 70’s, it’s the tale of a woman, Jamie Sommers, who must endure cyborg implants and sensory circuits in place of both legs, an arm and ear resulting from a parachuting accident. She then puts her new super human capabilities to good use, working undercover for the gov’t as a spy battling everything from fembots to BigFoot.

However, this time around the part of the heroine won’t be played by Lindsay Wagner but instead by the very promising and very hot Michelle Ryan. Even more promising is the series will be brought to us by the folks that delivered Battlestar Galactica and it will be filmed in Vancouver, BC (home of BSG, SG-1, SG Atlantis, etc…).

Few more details:
Cast: Michelle Ryan, Mae Whitman, Miguel Ferrer, Chris Boweres, Yun Lee, Molly Price
Synopsis: Remake of the 1970s Lindsay Wagner vehicle, with the new Jamie Sommers working as a bartender before the big accident and operation.
Exec producers: David Eick, Glen Morgan, Michael Dinner, Jason Smilovic, Laeta Kalogridis
From: NBC Universal
Network: NBC, 9 p.m. Wednesday

Do you recall the name of the agency that patched up and employed Jamie Sommers? It was OSI (Office of Scientific Information), the same secretive unit that employed Steve Austin – The 6 Million Dollar Man.

Here He Comes, Here Comes Speed Racer!

All kinds of hero goodness coming to the silverscreen right now with He-Man and Wonder Woman on the way.

Well, it looks like “Speed Racer” is in pre-production now according to IMDB and starts filming in Berlin June 5 2007 with a release date in mid 2008. To top it off it’s being Directed and written by the Wachowski brothers (Matrix movies)!

If you’re not familiar with Speed Racer, the first thing you need to do is go to Netflix and get the DVDs of the TV series in your queue. The second thing you need to do is punish yourself for the lack of geekiness (you choose the punishment, talk to a girl or sit in the front row or something).

So far we know the cast consists of:

sm_Speed_Racer Speed – Emile Hirsch EH_SR

Trixie Trixie – Christina Ricci CR_SR

Racer_X RacerX – Matthew Fox MF_SR

Mom_Racer Mom Racer – Susan SarandonSS_SR

POPs_SR Pops Racer – John GoodmanJG_SR

Casting Goodman as ‘Pops’ is spot on, good call. Fox as ‘Racer X’, I can see that, too. The rest of the cast is probably OK with the exception of Ricci, she just doesn’t strike me as ‘Trixie’. Ricci was chosen over Elisha Cuthbert and Kate Mara (!?!)

Speed Trivia coming soon…

He-Man returns to big screen

Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver (‘Matrix’) are working with Mattel to turn “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” into a live-action film. They’re overhauling the 80’s superhero in an effort for Warner to compete with the upcoming Transformers release this July.

And for Mattel, success in this movie could mean an entire relaunch of their toy line.

From Variety:

The franchise has been reimagined by the producer and the writers and pitched to Mattel as a classic good vs. evil battle, using the kind of visual effects strategy employed in “300.” A warrior is touted as the last hope of a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.
