Witchblade Sharpened For Bigscreen

Witchblade Teaser Poster

Platinum Studios, Top Cow Prods. and Arclight Films will team on a live-action feature adaptation of “Witchblade,” based on the Top Cow comic book franchise (link to the Wikipedia Witchblade page).

The comic book introduced the Witchblade mythology, which centers on an ornate jewel-encrusted gauntlet that gives extraordinary powers to the wearer, a specially chosen female from each generation.

From Wikipedia on Witchblade:

The Witchblade is an intelligent, ancient, and conscious weapon with extraterrestrial origins. It is one of thirteen weapons of this type. It is the offspring of the universe’s opposing aspects, the Darkness and the Angelus (the dark and the light). The Witchblade is a male aspect created to act as a balance, which must have a female as a host.

The comic book franchise has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide since debuting in 1995 and spawned a 2000 telepic that turned into a weekly series that ran for two seasons on TNT. “Witchblade” has been published in more than 21 languages and 55 countries, with merchandise widely sold. The most recent incarnation was an anime TV show in Japan by Gonzo Digimation in 2006.

The companies are already eyeing a location shoot in Australia.

Platinum Studios is involved in screen transformations of several titles from its comics library, including “Atlantis Rising,” a DreamWorks drama being produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and “Cowboys and Aliens,” another DreamWorks title that Kurtzman and Orci are producing with Imagine Entertainment. Platinum Studios has a Disney deal for “Unique” and is partnered with Hyde Park Entertainment on “Dead of Night,” based on the Italian comicbook series “Dylan Dog.”

New Will Smith Superhero Movie: Hancock

Hancock is a Will Smith dramedy superhero movie due out in July 2008.

Hancock is, well, sort of a degenerate superhero that doesn’t know the meaning of ‘treading lightly’ when using his powers. The teaser poster was recently released, as well as the trailers. You might prefer the quicktime version because I found the youtube version was missing scenes, in case you don’t have QT installed, here’s the youtube version anyway.

The flying whale, bellowing in horror, slays me 🙂

Our Gods Wear Spandex: The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes

Spandex

While searching through Amazon for a particular Fantasy book I stumbled across this: Our Gods Wear Spandex: The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes

I don’t own this but it appeared to be something that might appeal to some of you geeks looking for a holiday gift to let your significant other know about. It was just released a month ago, is 256 pages in length, is illustrated and costs less than US$14.

Here’s the editorial description:

In Our Gods Wear Spandex, Christopher Knowles answers these questions and brings to light many other intriguing links between superheroes and the enchanted world of estoerica. Occult students and comic-book fans alike will discover countless fascinating connections, from little known facts such as that DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz started his career as H.P. Lovecraft’s agent, to the tantalizingly extensive influence of Madame Blavatsky’s Theosophy on the birth of comics, to the mystic roots of Superman.

The book also traces the rise of the comic superheroes and how they relate to several cultural trends in the late 19th century, specifically the occult explosion in Western Europe and America. Knowles reveals the four basic superhero archetypes–the Messiah, the Golem, the Amazon, and the Brotherhood–and shows how the occult Bohemian underground of the early 20th century provided the inspiration for the modern comic book hero.

Zombie Attack in 3000 BC Egypt

mummy zombie
Hierakonpolis was one of the largest urban settings in Egypt along the Nile over 5000 years ago. Hierakonopols also claims the title to the earliest recorded zombie attack in history.

In 1892, a British dig there unearthed a tomb containing a decomposed body, whose brain had been infected with the ‘zombie’ virus, Solanum. In addition, thousands of scratch marks adorned every surface of the tomb as if the corpse had tried to claw it’s way out.

The Sissyfication And Other Movie Details For G.I. Joe

GI Joe

More info is starting to flow around the GI Joe action/adventure movie that is in the works.

Here’s 4 bits of news.

1. Plot Summary: The movie will be a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

2. The Sissyfication: No longer will this character be a US Special Forces soldier. It seems that the Iraq/Afghanistan skirmishes are causing Paramount and Hasbro to make some critical tweaks to the character and backstory in an effort to disassociate the franchise’s gung-ho leader from the US military. In the movie, ‘GI Joe’ is now a Brussel’s-based organization called ‘Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity’. WTF?

In this IGN article the execs discuss how GI Joe as a ‘Real American Hero’ would be a tough sell to some parts of the world.

In this Foxnews article retired Army Col. David Hunt, a military and terrorism analyst called the scheme a shame, adding "G.I. Joe is a U.S. guy. What are we going to call it — Global Joe? International Joe? It’s kind of stupid. It’s ridiculous that they’re doing that."

3. The Director & Writer: Also in GI Joe news is that Stephen Sommers will direct, he’s the fellow we have to thank for The Mummy and Scorpion King. One of the two writers is Stuart Beattie, he co-wrote the Pirates of the Carribean series.

4. The Date: The last piece of news I just picked up from ComingSoon.net is that GI Joe is slated for release on August 7, 2009. Maybe by then all the hullabaloo over the sissyfication of GI Joe will have blown over.

re: Heroes, I’m A Total Newb

Heroes

I’m a total Heroes newb.

I just recently started to watch the show, never having seen more than about 1 or 2 minutes of a snippet on TV long ago and figured since I already had too much to follow on my DVR last season that I’d make it up on reruns.

Oops, I missed the reruns of season 1, probably too caught up in Battlestar, Stargate and more.

So then i figured I’d get the season on Netflix. Oops, there was so much good stuff to watch that it kept falling to the bottom of the queue.

So here we are in Season 2 already, so what’s a geek to do?

What I’ve been doing is watching it online, I’m up through Ep 11 now after two and a half days and hope to be through the season by next week. 🙂

Man this show rocks!

Spider-Man The Rock & Roll Musical

Spiderman

Tony Award winning director Julie Taymor provides an update to LA.com on her latest baby: Spider-Man The Musical. She’s been collaborating with U2’s Bono and The Edge for a while now to cast and develop the score and lyrics.

“We want to open in New York, and there aren’t enough Broadway houses,” says Taymor, adding that Bono and The Edge have finished the book and lyrics for the project. “It’s really tricky because ours is a big musical that’s really unusual. It will have some fabulous things in it because it’s got a very strong book.” She says, “I’m very proud of the songs that Bono and Edge wrote. It’s a real rock-and-roll musical, so we’re not worried about that aspect.

It appears Marvel Entertainment is sharing producing credits on this, not surprising since MVL is generating a lot of its revenue from licensing deals at least the last 7+ years. I believe this is the first time though that a MVL character has made it to Broadway so Stan Lee can add another feather to his cap. 🙂

Justice League Begins Casting

Justice League

obsessedwithfilm alerts us to the fact that the upcoming film for ‘Justice League’ now has casting directors in place to go forth and fill the roles. Likely heroes would include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and possibly more heroes getting lesser screen time, this B list of heroes could include Atom, Aquaman, Plastic Man, Captain Marvel and more.

OWF is speculating that producer George Miller is looking to find several unknowns or up and coming actors for the film. So if you washed out of Sci Fi channel’s Who wants to be a superhero? then now is your best opportunity to hit it big as a real (er, fake real) superhero.

Here’s the link to OWF’s info on Justice League. Don’t get too excited just yet, this film likely wouldn’t see a release date until 2010.
