Yeah, what the heck is this thing?  I ended up spinning my wheels until I was told the origin of this photo.  Let’s see if you guys can figure it out ;)

My guess: part of the machinery in a clock.

My fiance’s guess: pencil sharpener.

Planetary gearset in automatic transmission.

Either Jim K’s call of planetary gearset, or it could be a limited slip differential.

Well a couple of you were pretty close! This is the internal gearing for a 3-speed bicycle hub. A second picture has been provided to show it in another perspective. Excellent guesses!
