The Star Wars blog details the teaming of LucasFilms with NASA to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars saga in this post. Last week, in a special ceremony at the NASA Space Center in Houston, many of the most popular characters in Star Wars showed up to officially pass over the possession of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber from Return of the Jedi.

In this photo Chewie hands off the lightsaber to one of NASA’s Directors of Marketing, where the device will be transported to Houston and held in inventory on board the Space Shuttle STS-120 during the Oct 23 2007 mission to the space station.

Dear NASA: Please for the love of all that’s holy, don’t turn the blade on when STS is in orbit. Thank you, Andy.
