Top 10 Linux commands for Newbies
Well now, this was timely. I was just lamenting the fact that I am a Linux newbie the other day when I posted the KDE/GNOME comparo. Now along comes this article right up my alley from LXPages.com. It’s the top commands that every newbie Linux user should know to start being effective or to start doing some damage.
Unless of course you’re not a newbie, in which case maybe you can tell me which distribution to check out. I installed VMWare Player the other day on the new Vista box and I’m thinking I may try to mount Ubuntu since it appears to be getting most of the press lately and may be the ‘next big thing’.

Ubuntu 6.1 is the next big thing. To try it out, you can run it off the CD, no need to install. Mandriva (www.mandriva.com) is also comparable. But if you need extreme performance out of your machine, Gentoo (www.gentoo.org) is the way. Gentoo is not for the faint hearted though, You build the whole system from Source code. Every bit is compiled on your machine and hence is fully optimised for your machine!
Whichever distribution, if you are a newbie, stay away from 64bit versions. It may be faster but lot of commercial stuff is not avialable such as Flash, Java, etc. 32 bit versions have all the functionality you expct out of M$ OS.
Thanks for the advice! Compiling the OS is not a problem for me, but i’m a big fan of ‘baby steps’ and ‘KISS’ before getting hard core.
So i’ll give Ubuntu a try.
I forgot to mention the last distro i experimented with was Mandrake about 2 years ago. I was really impressed with the driver coverage and for the most part PnP almost ‘just worked’ out of the box with the exception of the video where I believe I had to tweak a config file.
